Black & Decker 9099KC 7.2-Volt Cordless Drill with Keyless Chuck

Great drill for the price5

This drill is a great value for someone who uses it twice a month or less.

I found this locally for about $20. It has great features for the price: cordless 2-speed (325/650rpm) reversing (to drive screws) and a keyless chuck. The quality is quite good considering the price. It's well balanced and seems to have a good amount of power. It's stated capacity is a 1/2" in wood and 3/8" in steel. The battery pack is built inside. It uses 4/5 sub-C ni-cd cells. The shelf life of rechargeables is about

3 months so you will need to charge it occassionally.More detail ...

Black & Decker CDC180ASB 18-volt Compact Drill with 20 Accessories

Mediocre at best2

I picked this up for $40 on sale in a local store. It's adequate for most tasks but no better.

The battery can only be charged when it's plugged into the drill so you can't alternate between two to keep working. It doesn't have a variable speed setting so controlling the speed when driving screws is hard. The battery capacity seems small plus there's no charge level indicator on the device or charger so you don't know when it's fully recharged. Finally the RPM is very low compared to equivalents--getting through steel is going to take you a while.

If you can get it on sale for a reasonable price and don't want to do too many adventurous things with a power drill consider giving it a look.More detail ...

Black & Decker BD12PSK 12-Volt Smart Select Drill

Great tool5

I've had this drill for about a year and have been very happy with it. The torque settings are pretty much standard bit with images instead of numbers. It is powerful enough for everything I've thrown at it seems well made and sturdy and battery life is not bad at all. It has low speed low torque through low speed high/fixed torque and high speed for drilling. It fits comfortably in the hand. The drill bit holder on the side is pretty hard to get the bit out of and I don't really use it as a result. Great tool would buy again.More detail ...

Black & Decker PD600 Pivot Plus 6-Volt Nicad Cordless Screwdriver with Articulating Head

Form plus function: Works as good as it looks5

The benefits of cordless power tools are obvious but who says you need to pay hundreds of dollars to get the job done if you live in an apartment and don't have a contractor's license?

For $25 this is a super addition to any toolbox -- or kitchen cabinet. This is a great gift idea for dad -- or mom for that matter.

Here's why:

* Quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash. A nice tight grip.

* Multiple forward or reverse speeds at the click of a button. Torque control on the collar is easy to adjust and visual icons make it easy to figure out which one is best depending on whether you're using a screw or drill bit. Sweet.

* From 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge. Because it can take about six hours to re-charge it's a good idea to leave this plugged into an outlet in the kitchen bathroom or garage (but not longer than 3-4 weeks without use to avoid reduction in battery life).

* Ability to pivot the position of the handle or angle is big plus and great way to avoid carpel tunnel pain.

* The LED light built-in removable tape measure and bit holder on the handle are fluff but add to the coolness factor.

* Surprisingly light weight for it's rather large size.

So far no complaints. Price form and function add up to a solid 5-star rating. You simply can't go wrong here.More detail ...

DEWALT DC720KA Heavy-Duty Cordless 18-Volt Compact Drill/Driver

A bit overrated....3

I'm a contractor and our company specializes in erecting condos so we are more than familiar with our power tools. When I first started my job I invested in this DeWalt drill since EVERYONE has one. After using it for a while I feel that it is not all that it is hopped up to be the battery life sucks and I had to replace the battery after a couple months because it stopped holding its charge. After trying out others I would recommend Makita for the price and performance also do stay away from Ryobi that brand of power tools is a joke (I would get it for my learning teen but not for professional use).More detail ...

Makita BDF452HW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit

This Looks & Feels Like the Future5

This new driver/drill from Makita is a great piece of work. I bought this unit just days ago so this review is just an initial impression.

The BDF452HW is super light easy to handle and has good power. The batteries are physically small but still pack 18 volts. The L/I batteries have a very flat run-time curve...they stay full power until right at the end of the charge. They recharge in 15 minutes (for real). Makita seems to have capitalized on the advantages of new battery technology and combined it with a well built smooth advanced tool.

If you need brute power or a hammer drill this is not the drill for you. If you want a medium to medium heavy duty drill this lightweight beauty is close to perfect. I'll update this after several months of use. Right now I couldn't be more satisfied.

*Update (04/13/07) After using this drill for several months I still think it is the best drill/driver in this price/usage range. The batteries are excellent and the available power continues to satisfy me. This drill is lightweight reliable feels like quality and has the umph to drill even 2" Rock Maple and drive 2" lag screws into the same Rock Maple with no sweat. After living with it I'd buy it again!More detail ...
